Page 20 (Bury Lake bookings) is no longer available as bookings for boats are now being carried out at PACCAR.  Please contact PACCAR direct for boat bookings at Bury Lake.

PACCAR Interfaith Trail

After some hard work by Fred Russell and the Paccar Service Crews, a new activity at Paccar opened in August 2011, the Interfaith Trail.Interfaith Trail pod

As you make your way along the trail you will find a series of 10 information pods; one for each of the faiths we have links with in the County. Completing the appropriate questions will allow Cubs, Scouts and Explorer Scouts to be awarded with the Interfaith Badge. The trail is wheelchair accessible.

Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme

The Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme is an award operated at three levels Bronze, Silver and Gold, for young people aged 14 to 25 and recognised by colleges, universities and employers for its standard of achievement. Undertaking the Duke of Edinburgh's Awards alongside Scouting awards gives you the unique opportunity of two valuable accreditations. See link.

A team of County Duke of Edinburgh Award Advisors has been appointed to give support to this scheme in each District. Please contact the Advisor for your District if you have any questions about completing any of the sections of the Award level you are working on.

Hill Walking:

The County Adult Hill Walking Training Lead and Hill Walking Assessor is Phillip Gamston. ( We run 4 training weekends per year in the hills and mountains around the UK. Leaders are encouraged to come along on the training weekends to help develop their skills and also simply to get out there. We typically have one main assessment weekend each year with two in Kandersteg Expedition years.

One or two courses are run each year, the courses are organised by Jon, bringing in external accessors and trainers.

Creative Activities

Creative Activities are often overlooked when considering things to do in Scouting.

Adventurous Activities


 During 2015 the Scouit Association migrated this activity to the Scout activity permit scheme and holders of existing GB Archery qualifications permits were required to obtain a Scout permit. The County advisor and assessor is Simeon Keenan ( Simeon can connect you with your local archery expertise. We also run archery courses at PACCAR campsite once or twice a year to provide trhe basis for a Scout permit application. The contact for the courses is Cliff Brooke. (

Air Rifle Shooting

We have a competition standard air rifle shooting range at PACCAR. Leaders of shooting activities are required to hold a NSRA shooting qualification. NSRA courses are run once or twice a year. The contact for the Courses is Cliff Brooke. (

Water Activities

Canoeing/ Kayaking

The County adviser is Duncan Wakeling ( - Duncan is leading on the rebuild of our Kayaking and Canoeing support for leaders. We have a water weekend that includes an element of leader training each year in June and Duncan can connect you with our County Assessor Ian Bowditch.


The County Sailing adviser is Paul Harris ( He can connect you with the facilities we have access to at Bury Lake for learning and assessment on dinghy sailing etc.


Paul Huntley ( is our advisor and assessor for narrowboats. He can connect you with courses run at the Hillingdon Narrowboat Centre.


Scouting provides and encourages its members to take part in a very wide range of activities.

The County has an Assistant County Commissioner for Activities and a number of Activity Advisers who are all there to help you to get the most out of your Scouting.  See the other Activities pages for details and contacts.

The County is registered for The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme - individuals need to register before you start any activity which you want included in the Award. Read the latest edition of DofE news here.
