GLMW Hillwalking Weekend Dartmoor June 2025

This trip is to Dartmoor National Park over the weekend of 6th to 8th June 2025

The hill walking weekends are friendly and social, run by experienced and qualified Scouters, including members of the GLMW Duke of Edinburgh (DoE) scheme team.

New to hillwalking or looking to gain a permit, this weekend is designed to cater for all comers with a basic level of fitness.

Dartmoor National Park is one of the last great wildernesses in the UK with an inspirational landscape of heather-clad moors and rugged tors. Ponies roam its craggy landscape, defined by forests, rivers, wetlands and tors (rock formations). Trails wind through valleys with Neolithic tombs, Bronze Age stone circles and abandoned medieval farmhouses.

This trip is ideal for those new to hill walking, those who may want a skills refresher, to learn something new, are a seasoned pro, or just want to experience a nice weekend with good company in the British hills.

For those who are keen to gain or practice map, compass and other skills. We offer skills coaching from basic to advanced to enable you to gain the skills required for the UK hills, used locally to your Scout hut and should you wish, help you to prepare for assessment to gain a hillwalking Terrain 1 or 2 permit.  The weekend can also be used for testing your current skills, enabling you to build an experience of quality mountain days for your logbook.

Attendees from new leaders, young leaders (18+), and the more experienced also committee members are all very welcome!

• Location: Dartmoor National Park
• Cost: £30 – Payment details will be sent to you once booked.
  This covers accommodation and other items specifically supplied by the hill walking team but ‘not’ food or transport costs.

• Open to Adults (18 and over):
  • Involved in any Scouting role in GLMW
    (outside of GLMW, contact us using the form down page first before booking please)
  • That are members of the Scout Network
  • Accommodation: Camping
• Transport: Car sharing is the standard option, helping to reduce the overall cost and environmental impact.  We liaise with people who have signed up to organise this. But should you wish to arrange another mode of transport for yourself, that is fine too!
• Food: Self-catering Friday, Saturday & Sunday.  We will likely eat at a local establishment on Saturday evening.

How do I book a place?

1. Click ‘Book now’.
2. Check the details then scroll down and click ‘Proceed to checkout’.
3. Complete the information form.
4. Click the ‘Place order’ button – you will receive a confirmation email to the address input on the form.

Once booked, further details including payment details and a kit list will be emailed to you once your booking has been processed by the team.

Not a GLMW Scout County Member?

Depending on resources and the number of GLMW members planning to attend.  We are happy to accept a limited number of fellow Adult Scouters outside the county.
