Background to the Learning Scheme

Adult volunteers are at the heart of Scouting, and we hope that you will get every bit as much out of it as you put in. Scouting is not only about young people, but also about the development of adults within the Movement. To support adults in Scouting, the Scout Association provides a comprehensive programme of learning to build on existing skills and knowledge and develop new competencies; within the movement there are also awards to recognise dedication to learning and outstanding service. The County coordinates the Scout Association’s Adult Learning Scheme for all leaders, supporters, managers and other volunteers across all the Districts.

Getting started

Growing Roots is the learning you need to do within your first six months as a new volunteer, with Safety & Safeguarding completed within the first 30 days. It covers the basics of Scouts, safety, data protection and creating an inclusive environment. More information is available here.

Mandatory ongoing learning

Safeguarding and safety ongoing learning are available as e-learning modules.

To access these sign-in to scouts.org.uk and go to ‘My learning’ to access all our learning and to view your learning record. There you can see the learning you need to do, explore other learning you might be interested in, request to be assessed and keep track of your progress.

Training Courses

The County runs regular courses which cover one or more modules of the training scheme. These courses are offered in a variety of formats including evenings, one day or weekend offerings. Our Training Calendar lists all for up coming courses for the next 18 months. To book a place either ask your Local Training Manager or book online. We run our courses at a number of different venues across the County, click on the links below for directions and travel information:

Training across the London Region is free to attend, so if you are unable to attend one of our courses you are more than welcome to attend one run by another County: Greater London South West, Greater London South East, Greater London South, Greater London North, and Greater London North East.

Validation

Once you have completed the learning for a given module as part of the Adult Training Scheme you need to validate that learning, through discussion with your Learning Assessor or Local Volunteer Development Team.
