Background to the Training Scheme

Adult volunteers are at the heart of Scouting, and we hope that you will get every bit as much out of it as you put in. Scouting is not only about young people, but also about the development of adults within the Movement. To support adults in Scouting, the Scout Association provides a comprehensive programme of training to build on existing skills and knowledge and develop new competencies; within the movement there are also awards to recognise dedication to training and outstanding service. The County coordinates the Scout Association’s Adult Training Scheme for all leaders, supporters, managers and other volunteers across all the Districts. Different versions of the Adult’s Personal File cover the training requirements for groups of roles:

Remote Training

A variety of training modules are available to complete remotely, our dedicated page provides further information and links to materials.

Mandatory ongoing learning

Safeguarding ongoing learning is available as e-learning. Previously there has been a requirement to alternate between e-learning and face-to-face training for safeguarding – as of March 2020 this requirement has been removed. Safety training ongoing learning is available as e-learning.

Training Courses

The County runs regular courses which cover one or more modules of the training scheme. These courses are offered in a variety of formats including evenings, one day or weekend offerings. Our Training Calendar lists all for up coming courses for the next 18 months. To book a place either ask your Local Training Manager or book online. We run our courses at a number of different venues across the County, click on the links below for directions and travel information:

Training across the London Region is free to attend, so if you are unable to attend one of our courses you are more than welcome to attend one run by another County: Greater London South West, Greater London South East, Greater London South, Greater London North, and Greater London North East.

Validation

Once you have completed the learning for a given module as part of the Adult Training Scheme you need to validate that learning, through discussion with your Training Advisor or Local Training Managers.  Our dedicated training validation page contains check-your-knowledge documents which outline the key learning objectives for each module and outline the validation requirements.
